1.  Why don't you use x86 processors to build a workstation?
We get this question often.  Our goal in building this system and writing the firmware isn't to have a workstation that will compete against high-end processors.  It's mostly a project for a fun, learning experience.  It was decided early on that the system would be limited to only 8-bit MCU's.

2. Why are you using AVR's and not PICs or whatever?
The original inhouse experience was with AVR MCUs and with the growing popularity of the arduino and clones, it was decided that this MCU product line would be the default/standard for the project.  Plus, they're really awesome microcontrollers!
